Education & Training

All investigators and other key personnel involved in research with human subjects must complete the basic CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) curriculum for Human Subjects Research before engaging in research. Researchers cannot obtain an eIRB account without current CITI training.

To access the CITI modules, go to http://www.citiprogram.org. Remember to affiliate with Wake Forest University (WFU). If you are collaborating with researchers at School of Medicine, you may choose both WFU and WF School of Medicine as your affiliations.

Select the basic CITI Human Subjects Research course that best correlates with the type of research proposed:

  • Group 1: Social/Humanistic/Behavioral Research program for graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, and staff (9 modules); average completion time = 4-6 hours. Certification is good for 5 years.
  • Group 2: Social/Humanistic/Behavioral Research program for graduate and undergradute education students, faculty and staff (13 modules); average completion time = 6 hours. Certification is good for 5 years.
  • Group 3: Biomedical research program for graduate and undergradute students, faculty and staff, (15 modules); average completion time = 6 hours. Certification is good for 3 years.

Additional CITI modules are required for some types of research (e.g., internet surveys, international, vulnerable populations).

A score of 80% correct is required to receive credit for the course. Researchers are advised to print the notice of completion of CITI for their files.

Researchers who need to be re-certified must complete the refresher CITI course. Please log on to the CITI site to access their Knowledge Base.
