The Summer Bridge program works to increase student retention by enabling a smooth transition into college life. Prior to their first semester, underrepresented minority and/or first-generation students are introduced to time management, the library, student support offices, and a cohort of their peers, while they decrease stress by getting ahead on their course credits.

The Wake Forest University Summer Bridge program will transition 20 students into college life and build their communication skills. During the second summer session, participants will take an English writing and a Public Speaking course that work together to increase critical thinking, argument, and presentation skills. Activities outside of the classroom are designed to build camaraderie among the participants and relationships with institutional departments, university decisionmakers, and faculty. This pilot program targets low-income, minority, and/or first-generation college students; athletes and nonathletes will be equally represented.
